Sudan is the largest country in Africa, home to vastly different cultures, and resources including the Nile river and oil reserves. The country has endured European imperialization followed by 30 years of civil war. The largest tribe in southern Sudan is the Dinka, for whom the rearing of cattle is at the heart of their traditions. Most of their cattle was killed in the violence of civil war or abandoned in flight to refugee camps. Farmers have also been kicked off their land for government oil drilling, which funds the purchase of arms.
