The Mexican civilization was built upon the prosperity of thousands of indigenous corn varieties. Traditionally it has been their main crop and sustenance. Because of the rise of genetically modified seeds, the indigenous varieties are rapidly disappearing. Since the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement, highly subsidized cheap corn from the US has flooded the Mexican market forcing two million farmers off their land, many of whom have come to the US to find work.
