In the Vidarbha region of India, farmers have incurred debt because of the high cost of genetically modified seeds, as well as the low prices their crops receive due to a makret flooded with cheap, subsidized cotton from countries such as the US. For centuries farmers have saved their seeds from season to season, but genetically modified seeds must be rebought each season. The effects of climate change on the integral monsoons exacerbates difficulties and can result in the loss of entire crops.
Farmers in this region have been unable to overcome their debts, and hundreds of them have been using the over-priced pesticides to commit suicide.
